Founded in a Ventura, California garage in 1982, Gramicci began by crafting durable climber shorts and pants.
When a new generation of climbers known as the Stonemasters pioneered a new way of climbing in Yosemite National Park, they realized their pants didn’t provide enough flexibility. Mike Graham, nicknamed Gramicci, responded by creating the first climber pants with a diamond-shaped gusset in the crotch (borrowed from kung-fu trousers) for full 180-degree movement, while maintaining the toughness of painter pants and army surplus gear climbers used at the time.
The shorts came first, followed by trousers. Word spread quickly about these durable, flexible pants. By the mid-1980s, Gramicci had expanded beyond the climbing world: skaters and surfers embraced the brand for the same reasons climbers loved it: the perfect combination of flexibility and durability.
Today, Gramicci has a new home in Tokyo, Japan. While much has changed, the brand still produces hard-wearing, functional clothing designed with movement firmly in mind.
